Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has this evening launched the project for a new fibre optic cable system between Malta and Gozo, which he said, will strengthen the digital infrastructure of Gozo.
The Prime Minister was speaking during an activity in Sannat. The project will be partly financed through EU funds, and Dr Muscat said it is one of a series of projects and initiatives in the pipeline for Gozo.
The proposed route commences at the Xewkija industrial estate, then along 3.6 kilometres to the shore at Tal-Fessej, limits of Mgarr ix-Xini, and from there it goes underwater for 13 kilometres to Golden Bay, before terminating 4.3 kilometres away at Zebbiegh.
The funds for a feasibility study on a fibre optic cable, were first announced by the Prime Minister at a Cabinet meeting held in Gozo in July 2014.
A call for tender was issued by Malta Enterprise in 2017, and Elettra, which is a subsidiary of Orange Marine, won the deal.
Dr Muscat, speaking of the proposal for a permanent link between the islands, said that it will be a boost for foreign direct investment to Gozo, and the economy of both islands.
