On the occasion of Our Lady of Sorrows Feast on Friday, Gozo Bishop Mgr Mario Grech led a Mass outside St James Church in Independence Square.
Bishop Grech then headed a penitential pilgrimage with the venerated statue of Our Lady of Sorrows around the streets of Victoria. In his homily, Bishop Grech spoke on suffering, saying that “no one chooses to suffer or seek suffering, but suffering is a part of all of our lives, however few are those who ask if suffering has any meaning. The curse is not suffering itself but its absurdity.”
The Our Lady of Sorrows feast has a very special place in the hearts of thousands of devotees in Gozo and Malta and is traditionally celebrated on the Friday before Good Friday, when the faithful will walk in the procession behind penitential pilgrimages. Many of the penitents walk barefoot, in fulfilment of some vow for favours received through divine intercession.
