The two dry standing areas of Mgarr Harbour and Xlendi Bay in Gozo are to be regenerated through an investment of over € 1m, the government has said.
The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that these two new projects, financed from European funds, “continue to demonstrate the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo in addressing the needs of the island.”
She explained that the new facilities in Mgarr and Xlendi will not only serve to regenerate the respective sites, but also offer new facilities for the fishermen, including a new winch, new lighting, and water distribution system, as well as CCTV cameras.
Dr Caruana said that in Xlendi this project was a natural one to follow on from the jetty that was finished last summer, and also the regeneration of the boat houses in Xlendi that is currently underway, forming part of the masterplan for this area.
She remarked that the work on the dry standing in Mgarr is not an isolated intervention, as along with these new facilities there is also the project of reorganisation for Mgarr Harbour as promised in the election manifesto.
Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds and Social Dialogue Aaron Farrugia said that this project, with an investment of more than € 1m from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, will provide new infrastructure and a better, safer working environment for Gozitan fishermen.
