Work gets underway on first phase of the Xlendi masterplan

Work has started on the first phase of the Xlendi masterplan, and includes the restoration of 23 boathouse located in Pjazza Anfori which were built in the 70s.
Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, made the announcement, saying that the work on the boathouses, estimated at around € 300,000, will consist of replacement roofs, beams and where necessary other structures. There will also be the installation of membrane and the replacement of new openings.
All facades will be restored and a new decorative lighting system installed to complement Pjazza Anfori will be carried out later this year. The Minister explained that the waste and other materials from the back of the boathouses that had accumulated over the years, has been cleared away.
Minister Caruana said that the rehabilitation of the dry standing area in Xlendi will also be carried out through the assistance of European funds.
The Xlendi masterplan will address various aspects including cleaning the valley, and the final phase will be an exercise for the best use of existing space on the Xlendi promenade, this will be done following a consultation, Dr Caruana said.
“These projects are clear confirmation that the Government believes and wants to support the fishing industry in Gozo.” stated the Minister.
