The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana announced several infrastructure initiatives during a visit to Triq il-Hamrija Xewkija, which is currently being rebuilt.
The Minister said that there is ongoing work on many roads around Gozo with tenders having been published on several others, including Triq l-Imghallem and Triq ta’Wara in Victoria and Triq Zewwieqa in Qala.
Dr Caruana said that these roads were chosen following a consultation process with the Gozitan local councils to prioritise those that most need work.
She explained that work on the roads is just not a matter of laying tarmac, it also includes building foundations, the replacement or introduction of services and buildings more accessible pavements.
Along with all this work, there is also the ongoing exercise of traffic management to reduce nuisance and congestion, thereby helping to ensure less air pollution, the Minister said.
“I’m glad that residents and all users of this road and those which are are currently under construction will have better, safer and more appropriate roads,” said Minister Caruana.
She said that Project Gozo initiated the reconstruction of 50 roads, most of them residential, and spread all over the island so that every town and village enjoys this initiative.
Minister Caruana concluded by saying that the programme will also address arterial roads, as well as being prepared for the next stage which will involve a number of other roads, with further details to be given at a later date.
