A special hand postmark is being issued in Gozo to mark the occasion of the centenary from the issue of the ”10/- St Paul ” Malta Stamp.
MaltaPost said that this will be issued tomorrow, Wednesday, the 6th of March at the Victoria Post Office.
Orders may be placed online for this postmark at www.maltaphilately.com or by mail from the Philatelic Bureau, MaltaPost p.l.c. 305, Triq Hal Qormi, Marsa, MTP 1001 – Telephone 2596 1740 – e-mail: email@example.com
The Gozo Philatelic Society said that “a re-designed adaptation of a Gustav Dorè engraving showing St Paul’s shipwreck appeared in 1919: there was no official issue date but the 6th of March is generally accepted as the earliest recorded use.
“It seems that notaries “cornered the market” since the ten shillings face made it very useful for fiscal purposes. A 1922 reissue on a different watermark was considered necessary to replenish.
The GPS added that “because of this dearth of stocks – and rare postal use – this very dark stamp became Malta’s most expensive and, probably quite unexpectedly, the “black St Paul” is one of our most well-known!”
The Society said that as usual it will issue a commemorative postcard in a limited edition of 100 to accompany the special hand postmark, which is “being issued by MaltaPost on the initiative of the Gozo Philatelic Society.”
Each card will be individually numbered and cancelled with the occasion postmark. Each card costs €3.00. If interested to acquire one of these cards please contact Anthony Grech on e mail firstname.lastname@example.org
