A reminder that next weekend, the Don Bosco Oratory of Gozo, with the collaboration of Fondazzjoni Santa Cecilja, will be staging Wojtyla – God’s Clarion Call, to mark the 40th anniversary since Karol Wojtyla became Pope.
This is an original musical in Maltese about St. John Paul II, the only Pope who has ever reached the shores of Gozo.
Maybe this is one of the reasons why this Pope has a special place in the hearts of every Gozitan, and his story has inspired this musical which will be produced for the first time on the island of Gozo, written by Gozitan composer Antoine Mercieca, based on lyrics by Gozitan poet Joe W. Psaila.
It will be a two-hour live production of “good original music, song, projections and dance entwined with a story which would make the audience remember the highlights of John Paul II’s life,” the Oratory said.
The best Gozitan talent will be showcased in this musical, among them is Jamie Camilleri who will be playing the title-role of John Paul II.
Other characters will be interpreted by Maria Cassar, David Grech, Angelo Muscat, Ruth Portelli, Janelle Rapa, Antonella Rapa and Thomas Xerri, together with a 70-strong cast, including musicians, singers and dancers.
The musical director is composer Antoine Mercieca, with Saviour Cremona the artistic director of the show
The Ministry for Gozo is supporting this original musical through its scheme – Reaching for the Stars, through which, youths between 13 and 35 years would be given the opportunity to purchase a subsidised entrance ticket for the show.
