Illegal immigration document endorsed by Home Affairs Council

Council of EuropeA document presented by Malta, Cyprus, Greece and Italy earlier this month during an informal meeting of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers in Prague has been circulated amongst all 27 member states as an official document.

The document in question was drafted and agreed upon by the four States in order to keep illegal immigration high on the European Union’s agenda during the current Czech Presidency and the Swedish Presidency during the second half of this year. In it, Malta, Cyprus, Greece and Italy sought to highlight some aspects of the Immigration and Asylum Pact, which was agreed upon by the Member States in October last year, which are especially important to them.

The group is calling for priorities to be assigned to certain actions in particular fields including the drawing up of readmission agreements with countries of transit for illegal migrants, the establishment of better mechanisms for the repatriation for such migrants, the strengthening of Frontex border patrols and the creation of the burden-sharing mechanisms mentioned in the Pact.

Malta was instrumental in getting this initiative off the ground in an exceptionally short timeframe.

The circulation of the document may be a sign that this document has been put on the agenda and will be discussed during upcoming meetings of the Home Affairs Council.
