A reminder that this weekend there are a number of events being held in Gozo to mark the anniversary of Professor Joseph Vella’s sudden demise last year.
The first activity is on Friday evening – A Man for all Seasons – a lecture at Il-Hagar Museum in Victoria.
The lecture, which will delivered in English by Dr Maria Frendo will deliver the lecture in English, will be followed with the official opening of a temporary Exhibition about Professor Vella as a pioneer in the use of Maltese texts.
Il-Hagar Museum said that it is the proud owner of the Joseph Vella Music Archive, donated by him on the cultural centre’s fifth anniversary.
The lecture will be held on Friday, the 22nd of February, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance is free but booking on firstname.lastname@example.org  is recommended.
Other events for these anniversaries include two concerts, the first on Saturday, the 23rd of February at noon: which will be a concert of sacred motets by the Liverpool Cathedral Choir at St George’s Basilica, with Director of Music Lee Ward.
Then at 8pm on the same evening, there is a concert of Joseph Vella’s compositions at Aula Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia, with the participation of the Laudete Pueri Choir and soloists, Director George J. Frendo.
On Sunday, the 24th there’s a commemorative event in honour of Maestro Joseph Vella, (please click here for full details ) who passed away on the 25th of February last year, organised by the Ministry for Gozo with the participation of the La Stella Philharmonic Society.
The La Stella Band will play band marches in honour of Mro Vella, departing from the Astra Theatre at 10am to the Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria, where the commemorative event continues.
Also on Sunday at 11am Holy Mass for the repose of Mro Joseph Vella’s soul, celebrated by Dr Joseph Farrugia, with the participation of the Laudate Pueri Choir at St George’s, followed by a buffet lunch at 12.30pm at the Hotel Calypso.
