An agreement has been reached between the Ministry for Gozo and the Franciscan religious community for Villa Lauri in Birkirkara, to be used as accommodation for Gozitan students studying in Malta and relatives of patients hospitalised in Malta.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, who explained that this house will provide accommodation for 33 people.
The Ministry said that it is expected that work will get underway in April, with the aim of opening its doors to welcome the first residents at the beginning of next year.
Dr Caruana said that the Ministry for Gozo has been working over the last months to find both a short term and long term solution so that Gozitan students have the chance of affordable accommodation in which to live.Following several discussions a site was found that met these requirements, and, she added, would be welcoming Gozitan students and relatives of patients who are undergoing treatment in Malta, thereby completing another announced Budget measure.
The Minister for Gozo went on to say that housing will not be the only project in this regard. She explained how the Ministry is working on a holistic and tangible plan to assist students and their families in respect of the rent problem.
“Further measures will also be announced soon which will facilitate the life of Gozitan students pursuing studies locally and for the relatives of patients in Malta,” concluded Dr Caruana.
