The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana has announced plans for the new Marsalforn breakwater.
Dr Caruana gave an account of the state of progress on the preparations to implement the Marsalforn Masterplan once the required permits have been issued by the Planning Authority.
Minister Caruana explained how the “Marsalforn breakwater project is also part of this ambitious masterplan which is an election pledge of this government.”
“Despite several attempts in the past this project never materialised, but now, the Ministry for Gozo is determined to implement it,” she added.
Dr Caruana said that the tenders were published over the past days for work on the promenade, covering refurbishment, modernisation of structures, and the installation of decorative lighting to complement the area, among others. The Minister explained how a team of technical experts “carefully assessed each study that was done in the past in the hope that the public funds invested in them were not wasted.”
“While useful information was obtained, these studies were not relevant for the present day and therefore two more tenders have been published,” said the Minister.
These are a tender for-the Geotechnical Investigation and Reporting on the Marsalforn Breakwater Project in Gozo and a Tender for the Preparation of a Project, Description Statements and Environmental Impact Assessment.
Dr Caruana explained that through these recent studies, the application can be submitted to the Planning Authority to implement this project.
The Minister said that these two massive projects form part of a programme of work intended for this area including the rebuilding of Triq G?ajn Melel from Zebbug village to Xwejni Bay, the construction of Triq ix-Xwejni and the rebuilding of the main road from Victoria to Marsalforn.
Dr Caruana concluded by saying that these projects are each targeted at tackling the infrastructure problem in Gozo.
