The niche of the Annunciation of Our Lady, in Gambin Street, Ghasri, has been returned to its former glory, with the completion of the restoration project which was started in November.
The niche is located at the junction of four roads – Triq Il-Knisja, Triq Iz-Zebbug, Triq Salvu Gambin and Triq Il-Wilga.
Dating back to the year 1773, the niche is located in the heart of this picturesque village. It is a very particular niche in its style since it is located on a gallery and relies on three columns, it represents the Angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she would become the Mother of God.
The Ghasri Local Council was awarded funds to complete the work through a special scheme launched for local councils by the Ministry for Gozo, which was announced in June last year. It was one of six historic sites, selected from 13 submissions.
Ghasri Mayor Dr Daniel Attard thanked the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, Rita Mifsud Attard, Mario Cordina, Toni Calleja “and all those who helped to realise this project funded by the Ministry of Gozo and coordinated by the Ghasri Local Council.”
