There are approximately 72,700 people in Gozo and Malta who suffer from hypertension, around 55,000 of them are receiving treatment for the condition. Social Policy Minister John Dalli provided the figures in answer to a parliamentary question put by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis.
The Minister said that the 55,000 persons receiving treatment included both those patients who were diagnosed, and were being treated privately, and those who were being treated by government services.
The Minister added that there are currently 21,250 yellow cards issued for free medicines, which included others who have the yellow card for other conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.
