The Bishop of Gozo Mgr. Mario Grech, in this year’s Christmas message, gives the same message that the angel gave to the shepherds in Bethlehem when Baby Jesus was born.
“Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the city of David there has been born for you a Saviour: He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger”
The Bishop said that God was born and became a man to suffer everything that all of us humans suffers.
He explained that the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger throws light on the maternal love of Mary, Mother of Jesus, “she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger.”
She cared for her baby by putting him in swaddling cloths to protect him from the cold weather and not to suffer the sharpness of the straw, said the Bishop.
“The same cloths that Jesus was wrapped in when he was a baby, were a few years later given by Mary for her son to be wrapped in again after he was crucified.” Mgr Grech added, “Mary has the same love for the rest of mankind as she showed her son,”
The Bishop also said that a few weeks ago, the Diocese of Gozo began celebrations for the 400th anniversary since the painting of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu was placed in the Sanctuary.
