Operators in the Gozitan tourism sector were given the opportunity to increase their awareness about the implementation of better and more responsible environmental good practices which finally will result in better profitability for their business. This was the theme discussed during a conference organised in Gozo by the Tourism and Sustainable Development Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister in association with the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO).
FTO representatives presented to participants more details and information regarding these practices as well as other advertising means used to promote sustainable tourism operations, be it from the economic perspective as well as from environmental, social and cultural sides. While addressing those present, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that the information being delivered at the conference is of particular relevance to Gozitan establishments, with regards to Government’s eco-Gozo vision. The success of this vision primarily depends on sustainable development which aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Tourism stands to gain through sustainable development and thus the industry itself needs to contribute so that this aim may be achieved.
Minister Debono also said that tourism is a main pillar for the socio-economic development of the island of Gozo and that is the reason why the Ministry for Gozo continuously collaborates with the stakeholders involved in this sector. In the present scenario and the expected repercussions within economic and social spheres due to the international economic crisis, it is important that stakeholders understand the importance and necessity of strengthening the Gozitan tourism product, in order that it may be more sustainable and competitive within tourism markets.
Minister Debono urged tourism operators in Gozo to avail themselves of the Grant Scheme for Tourism Projects which has been recently launched, through the allocation of €10 million from European Structural Funds. The Minister stated that 14 out of 54 projects which benefitted from financial aid through the Grant Scheme for Tourism Enterprises 2004-2006, were operators of Gozitan tourist establishments.
Mario Demarco, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism within the Office of the Prime Minister delivered the opening speech of this conference while Mr Peter Portelli, Permanent Secretary within the same Parliamentary secretariat, introduced the speakers.
