Lazuli Art Gallery is opening the first collaborative exhibition of father and son, Paul and Thomas Scerri, of sculptures in different mediums, this Saturday, the 17th of November, in Victoria, Gozo.
VO/ERACITY – is the title of this exhibition by Paul and Thomas, who work on the theme of our environment, both ecological and social/political.
Paul, by pursuing his work to represent today’s society in his ceramic sculptures, “a society built on apathy, ignorance, greed and the love of power. Traits that are destructing our ambiance, our characteristics and robbing us of our identity,” he said.
He explained that the sitting position of the sculptures indicate an attempt to dialogue, “a discussion to cure this socio-economic malady.”
Thomas Scerri’s project was instigated by what he describes as “the sad situation of a great number of trees being sacrificed due to construction of roads, apartments and bad pruning.”
He said that “trunks from the actual trees that suffered this slaughter were used in this body of work, letting them dictate the final form of the sculptures.”
The artist said that there is the contrast between the organic and the manmade – “a dichotomy which is addressed frequently in my work.”
Lazuli is a Fair Trade Gallery of Primitive Art which also curates contemporary exhibitions of both local and international artists in winter.
This exhibition opens tomorrow, Saturday, the 17th of November till Sunday, the 9th of December.
Opening days will be Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10.00am to 1.00pm.
