The Sense Group welcomes the setting up of an advisory board to put the recently launched National Alcohol Policy into action.
The National Alcohol Policy, which is currently undergoing public consultation, aims to adopt a multifaceted, multi-sectoral approach in order to minimise the harm caused by the irresponsible use of alcohol.
It also contains actions specific to underage drinking, alcohol consumption in general and drink driving among others.
The Group, in its statement said, that as as an organisation, which along with other non-governmental industry and business entities, was consulted in the process of drafting this policy, will continue to offer its contribution and support in order to tackle alcohol abuse including under-age drinking.
It added that it has always been at the forefront in promoting moderation in alcohol consumption and two years ago, launched an updated Code of Practice for outlets that serve alcoholic beverage for consumption on premises.
The Group explained that these guidelines were designed to ensure that alcohol is promoted in a socially responsible manner, and only to those who are over the legal drinking age of 17 years.
“Our role is to educate the public and those in the alcoholic drinks industry on the use and misuse of alcohol, while discouraging any form of irresponsible drinking,” said Ray Grech, Director General of The Sense Group. “We are therefore looking forward to seeing the new National Alcohol Policy move forward for the benefit of our community,” he added.
Set up in 1997, The Sense Group is supported by the alcoholic beverages industry including producers and importers.
