On Sunday – Gozo Day was commemorated with the `Gieh Ghawdex’ Awards Ceremony held at Independence Square, Victoria, organised the Ministry for Gozo in collaboration by Circolo Gozitano, under the patronage of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.
This year the award was presented by the President to Dr Anton Refalo and Paul Cassar.
Since 2005, the 28th of October has become to be known as ‘Jum Ghawdex’ or Gozo Day to commemorate one of the most famous chapters in Gozo’s history.
On Sunday evening there was also a short reenactment of the events at that time – the capitulation of the French in Gozo on 28 October 1798 under the leadership of the Gozitan Archpriest Saverio Cassar. The French stay in Gozo only lasted 141 days!
The Circolo Gozitano in 2005, instituted the Gieh Ghawdex Award to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the death of Archpriest Saverio Cassar, 1745-1805, leader hero of the Gozitans.
The award is made every year on Gozo’s national day, to honour personalities and/or organisations who have contributed to the social and economic development of Gozo, as well as to the preservation and promotion of Gozo’s distinct identity.
President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, both laid a wreath at the statue of Archpriest Saverio Cassar in Independence Square.
