Budget has improved the education sector - Gozo University GroupThe Gozo University Group commenting on the announcements in the Budget 2019, affecting students, said an increase in students’ stipends will be beneficial for all students in helping to cover the expenses pursuing his/her education.

GUG in a statement said that, the 2019 Budget has “improved the education sector along with the student’s quality of living. Investing in the student’s well-being will also be beneficial to the state in the near future.”

It continued that another advantage is that as from next year, 14 and 15-year olds, along with full-time students over 20-years of age, will enjoy a free public transport, helping more students economically who have to travel daily to school, the organisation said.

GUG pointed out that it would however be of help if the public transport is improved so that it is more accessible and reliable.

As from next year, MATSEC and SEC exams are to be free, the GUG said. This is a major step towards the improvement of the education sector in the Maltese islands.”

“It means that the MATSEC and SEC exams will no longer be a financial toll for some students and their families who find it difficult to pay for these exams,” said the organisation.

As a Gozitan student organisation, GUG said that it believes that an increase in the subsidy given to Gozitan students residing in Malta will ease some of the financial toll that these students spend on accommodation, along with other expenses. This is possible under certain conditions.

GUG concluded that it would have liked to have seen more news about the Gozo University Campus budget, with no mention of a refurbishment heard for some time. “If this campus is to be used, the environment needs to be an adequate and suitable one.”
