Gozo Channel passengers, vehicles and trips all up in the third quarter

Gozo Channel crossings1,780,474 passengers travelled on Gozo Channel during the third quarter this year, up by 6.3% when compared to last year, the National Statistics Office said today.

August saw the highest number of passengers – 620,042 or 34.8% of the total of the quarter. Vehicles crossing over went up by 7.6% – at 498,888.

The NSO said that there were 6,764 trips, an increase of 6.8% on last year. It noted that most trips took place in August – 2,292 or 33.9% of the total trips in quarter three.

4,436,889 passengers were carried on vessels operating between Malta and Gozo between January and September, an increase of 7.4% on last year, the NSO said.

It added that passenger numbers from Cirkewwa were busiest on Friday and Saturday, whereas highest numbers from Mgarr were recorded on Sunday and Saturday.

      Good new for Gozo Channel, perhaps.
      But BAD news for Gozo – which is already full.
      The price for bringing a car over is obviously far too cheap.
      Gozo Channel Co could make more money by doubling or tripling the fare for cars.
      More money, but less weight on the ships.
