UNWTO Secretary General discusses tourism with the Gozo Minister

The Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana has met with the Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, Mr Zurab Pololikashvili.
The meeting at the Ministry for Gozo, was also attended by representatives from the Gozo Tourism Association and the local tourism industry, when matters relating to the local tourism setor were discussed, including the need to promote Gozo as a distinct tourist destination.
Dr Caruana described it as an “excellent meeting,” strengthening endeavours to promote Gozo. The Minister pointed out that in recent months toursim numbers have increased substantially, creating a need for sustainable tourism, where the focus is on quality rather than numbers.
There is also a need for even more visibility for Gozo through collaboration with international bodies such as UNWTO, she said.
The Secretary-General explained that his mission is to foster collaboration, and in that respect, for Gozo to be on the agenda through invitations to the Ministry for Gozo to be a member of the body and use it as a platform to ensure that Gozo becomes more valuable as a destination
Minister Caruana accepted the invitation saying that Ministry will have active participation in the body.
The World Tourism Organisation is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
It encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, to maximise tourism’s socio-economic contribution while minimising its possible negative impacts, and said that it is committed to promoting tourism as an instrument in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), geared towards reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development worldwide.
