The International Day Of The Girl Child has been marked in Gozo this week, with a visit by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, to Sir Mikelang Refalo Sixth Form and the MCAST Campus Gozo.
During their visits they conveyed to the students “a strong message towards girl and female empowerment.”
The 11th of October has been marked since 2012 as the International Day of the Girl Child, with the theme for this year is – A Skilled GirlForce – and the day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. As patron and ambassador of the Girl2leader campaign, spearheaded by the Women Political Leaders Global Forum, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca visited tertiary education institutions in Malta and Gozo over the past few days to raise awareness about the International Day of the Girl Child and the importance of female participation across all strata of society.
The President explained that the Girl2Leader campaign targets dangerous forms of gender stereotyping which continue to hold back too many girls and young women from achieving their full potential as leaders and contributors in society.
