The first edition of the International Wind & Kite Festival has been launched by the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, which will be held near the chapel of San Dimitri, just to the north of the village of Gharb.
The three-day festival opens on Friday, the 19th until Sunday, the 21st of October. The Minister . said that this festival is unique to the islands and an experience for kite enthusiasts, a tradition that Gozo was renowned for, but that has faded over time. Dr Caruana added that she would like to see this tradition gain popularity once more among our youngsters.
The festival will feature international, traditional and professional kite fliers, with around fifteen delegations from different countries and regions, all in Gozo to participate in the event, which will include workshops.
During the weekend there will be various activities related to kite flying, as well as food, entertainment and games, with local products and traditions associated with the locality of Gharb, including a typical local dinner in Gharb Square. The very popular, Traditional San Dimitri Fair will be taking place on the Sunday as part of the programme for the festival.
The Gharb Mayor David Apap Agius, thanked the Ministry for Gozo for believing in this new initiative. He said that the local council is committed to attract more tourism to the island and to continue in promoting the locality of Gharb. He encouraged everyone to attend this celebration of art, culture and colours.
Entry is free of charge to the festival and the full programme for the three days is available to download by clicking here.
