The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra has just received delivery of a brand new harpsichord manufactured by world renowned German manufacturer JC Neupert. This acquisition was made possible through the collaboration agreement signed between the MPO and Bank of Valletta last November. The arrival of this much-awaited instrument will serve to enhance the National Orchestra and enable it to broaden its performance repertoire.

Edward Muscat Azzopardi, Head Marketing at Bank of Valletta met MPO Chairman Lino Attard during a courtesy visit to the National Orchestra’s premises to view the newly-arrived instrument.

“Bank of Valletta has been relentless in its support to Malta’s artistic and cultural heritage over the years. This acquisition adds a unique instrument to the Orchestra that will add a new dimension to its repertoire. We’re pleased that our contribution aids in promoting the talent and zeal of local musicians,” explained Mr. Muscat Azzopardi.

Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Chairman Mr. Lino Attard thanked Mr. Muscat Azzopardi for the Bank’s continuous support and interest in the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. “This close collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is a perfect example of how the business and arts sectors can work hand in hand. We hope that this example sets new standards in our country to the benefit of culture in general,” concluded Mr. Attard.

The “Blanchet” double-manual harpsichord is considered one of the top-of-the range models in the field and is used by some of the world’s leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and may be found in important centres such as the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. François-Étienne Blanchet (1695-1761) was the most famous member of a family, which decisively influenced harpsichord making in France in the 18th century. Blanchet was also the master of Pascal Taskin, the most eminent French harpsichord maker during the second half of the 18th century. The J.C. NEUPERT workshops had access to original harpsichords by François-Étienne Blanchet which were used as models for the modern-day copies of these historic instruments.

The new harpsichord will be officially inaugurated during a concert that will be held on the 24th of January at the Manoel Theatre, allowing the orchestra to venture into new musical productions which have in the past been unattainable.
