The Gozo born artist Joseph Calleja, has donated to the Archdiocese of Malta 15 paintings from his series “The Sacrifice of the Lambs.”
These paintings took the artist 15-years to complete, with ethics and faith as the two main themes of this artistic work.
The paintings testify to the artist’s cultural roots and his sensitivity to tragedies and the human sufferings, the Archdiocese said.
The artist was inspired by the Maltese Neolithic temples, where on their stone altars the lamb was sacrificed as an offer to the Gods.
The lamb, which was always a symbol of innocence, became the symbol of salvation through Jesus Christ, the Lamb God, who died on the cross to redeem mankind, said the Archdiocese.
93-year old Joseph Calleja, was born in Xewkija, Gozo and has for the last 60 years lived in Toronto, Canada. He is known as one of the best artists of modern art.
Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna thanked Joseph Calleja for his generosity and augured that the arts continue to be an expression of faith and hope before the grim realities which are confronting humanity.
