Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said it is full square behind the complainants against the high amount of registration duty on the cars of EU citizens resident in Malta.
Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, said, “On the 19th of January next, the European Parliament Petitions’ Committee will be examining the petitions by two UK residents in Malta forced to pay high amounts of registration duty on their used cars brought into Malta from Britain.”
“The payment of this high registration tax is unfair since these EU citizens had already paid their registration tax in Britain, part of EU territory, and therefore should not be obliged to repay registration tax on the same car in Malta, also part of EU territory.”
“We urge Dr Simon Busuttil, who forms part of the EP Petitions’ Committee to speak up against this unjust double taxation of EU Citizens’ property,” concluded Prof. Cassola.

Government imposed VAT on vehicles was a day light robbery and,
I support those car owners who are claiming back the money which
they were made to pay.
I agree wholeheartedly with this petition. I am Maltese and returning to Malta following many years abroad. I own a four year old vehicle which I want to bring with me to Malta. Having checked the new ADT website it is going to cost me more than the actual vehicle is worth in tax to import it.
This is understandebly very unfair as registration has already been paid in the UK.
I ask , is Malta a EU member just for the handouts and benefits or are we going to abide by ALL the rules governing the European Union. I urge all ex pats to voice their opinion on this and lobby the government to abide by the european laws.
Dear Mr Tabone,
The petition is still open in the European parliament since the Maltese government has stated that it will change the present taxation regime.
Let us hope that this will be something concrete and not just hot air.

Could anyone inform us or tell us as to how one can claim for the refund of the VAT duty paid on vehicles purchased or imported from the EU after May 2004?
