Victoria Playing Field's long awaited opening takes place next weekThe long awaited opening of the Victoria Playing Field in Gozo will be taking place next week during a planned programme of events over the Public Holiday weekend.

Many families with children will be looking forward to at last being able to enjoy the facilities on offer.

The playing field was passed to the Local Council by the Government some years ago, following many years of neglect

The original state of the playing field was highlighted by the AD party in April 2009, when they visited the area and made a video. AD at the time, voiced their support for the Victoria Local Council in its quest to acquire the land from the Government.

Planning permission for the refurbishment of the playing field was then received by the Victoria Local Council in 2012, with details of the proposal released a few months later, including artistic drawings and a video.

However, work did not get underway for some time, and was then subject to delays for various reasons. Work on the Playing Field then resumed in June last year, but again stalled sometime later.

Perimeter fencing was installed earlier this year, together with the finalisation of landscaping. Finally in August of this year, Victoria Mayor Samuel Azzopardi said that repairs on the playing field equipment which had been vandalised over the previous months was being carried out, including the changing of damaged rubber flooring.

The Victoria Playing Field’s Open Weekend is next Friday and Saturday, the 21st and 22nd of September.

The Local Council said that “this children and family oriented space in Victoria is catered towards children, adolescents and parents/guardians.”
