The tour dates are between the 22nd and 27th August, and during the choir’s visit to Sicily, it will be giving two major performances in the Sicilian capoluogo, which this year is celebrating its status as the Italian Capital of Culture.

A Concert of Sacred Music at the Palermo Cathedral next Friday, starts off the tour programme, and will feature works by Dr John Galea.

Chorus Urbanus said that it will have the honour to meet and also sing works by one Italy’s foremost composers, Prof. Marco Betta (Conservatorio di Palermo), who is also a very close friend of the choir’s musical director.

A High Mass in Monreale Cathedral, will then follow on Sunday, during which Chorus Urbanus will perform John Galea’s Missa in Fractione Panis together with other liturgical motets.

The choir added that Maestro di Cappella at Monreale Cathedral, Maestro Marco Intravaia will be accompanying the Gregorian chants alternating with polyphony on the magnificent organ during Mass celebrated by Mons. Nicola Gaglio, the Duomo’s Archpriest.

Chorus Urbanus will be under the musical direction of Dr. John Galea for both of these performances.

The choir’s committee has organised a full programme of event in Sicily for the members on tour.

“The committee has been working incessantly for during the last few months to ensure that this choral tour is as successful as the preceding excursions on foreign soil,” the choir said.

“This is a very special and significant choral tour that is taking place this year, when Malta is celebrating its status as the 2018 European Capital of Culture and Palermo as the 2018 Italian Capital of Culture.”

Chorus Urbanus said that “as one of Gozo’s cultural exports, we appreciate the tangible support that is being offered by the Minister for Gozo Dr. Justyne Caruana, and the EcoGozo Directorate.”

The Choir said that it also appreciates the input by its Sicilian contact person Prof. Franco Foderà, Conservatorio di Trapani.
