Gozitan Dr Anthony Galea, has won the European Public Speaking Championship at the 2018 JCI European Conference, held earlier this month in Riga, Latvia.
Dr Galea will now go on to compete at the 2018 World Congress being held in Goa, India this October, where he will be defending the honour of Europe.
Dr Galea is from the Physical Oceanography Research Group within the Department of Geosciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Malta. He won the National Competition in March, which assured him the place in Riga.
The win in the European Public Speaking Championship is a first for Malta, and Dr Galea, who was representing JCI Malta, was awarded in front of 1,300 delegates from 80 countries.
In the semi-final round of the championship the topic was – Sustainable transport is essential to achieving most, if not all, of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals.
Then in the final round it was on – To successfully achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development by 2030, young people must increase their role as active citizens in their local communities.
Dr Galea gave his talks a scientific twist, that incorporated humour while using props, which impressed the competition judges. A JCI video of the winning talk is available to view here.
Another great achievement was for the JCI Debating Team from Malta – Christoph Schwaiger, Nicole Borg and Rachel Cassar – who were placed second in the Public Speaking Competition.
The JCI European Conference included various training sessions targeting effective communication, management and business. Three other Maltese delegates representing JCI Malta competed at the English Debating Championship and made it to the final round.
