Regeneration project for St John the Baptist Square in XewkijaA tender for the regeneration of St John the Baptist Square in Xewkija, has been issued by the Ministry for Gozo.

Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that this project will give a boost to the village of Xewkija and its residents, as well as visitors to the locality.

The Xewkija Square project will also complement the surrounding environment dominated by the imposing Rotunda Church, she added.

Dr Caruana explained that the new project will not only mean that the square will become one for the people, therefore adding to the environmental aspect, but will also make it more accessible, while particular attention is being made to the traffic flow which passes through the square every day.

The Minister thanked everyone who participated and submitted their views during the public consultation process on the square which took place earlier this year.

This work is a just a link in a chain of projects that the Ministry for Gozo is carrying out in this locality, Minister Caruana said.

She explained that, among those already underway is the restoration of the Xewkija Mill, which was commissioned by Grand Master Perellos at the beginning of the 18th century, and is the only one that has an octagonal tower base.

Work is also due to start in the coming days on Ulysses Grove, that will see it turned into a family park and where more trees will be planted. Both projects are co-financed through European funds, she said.

Other important infrastructure projects are the rebuilding of Triq il-Knisja and Triq il-Hamrija, which is a 1.3km arterial road, and an important one for the island with a heavy volume of traffic.

The Minister for Gozo concluded by saying that, also in the coming weeks a tender will be published for work to be carried out on the roads within the Xewkija Industrial Zone.
