Gozo is commemorating World Environment Day, which this year has the theme – Beat Plastic Pollution.
An activity, organised by the Ministry for Gozo, to mark the occasion was held in the Villa Rundle Public Gardens attended by Gozitan primary school students.
The children were given recycled containers containing seed of native trees, and were encouraged to nurture them according to the information provided by the experts present.
The Ministry said that the idea behind this is that so the orchards in Ulysses Grove will be rehabilitated for the enjoyment of families.
Minister Justyne Caruana said that these activities raise awareness about how important it is for the need to protect the environment, and said that everyone should contribute and take action to reduce as much as possible, the use of products made from plastic.
Dr Caruana urged the children to use recycled products that don’t impact on the environment. She pointed out that the country is currently undergoing a public consultation on a scheme that the government wants to introduce, and which is intended to reduce the amount of plastic from the environment – the material that is a major source of pollution.
The Minister referred to the work of the Ministry for Gozo and spoke about a number of measures and initiatives already undertaken towards environmental protection of the island, including: planting more trees, building rubble walls, an aid scheme for farmers to restore or build new wells, and assistance schemes to local councils for projects to develop the natural heritage.
