ADAD joins the call by the European Green Party for the EU to invest heavily in the transition towards a renewable energy system. AD spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Transport Ralph Cassar said that the current dispute over gas supplies between Russia and Ukraine and the ensuing cuts in supply to several EU member states shows the urgent need for the EU to invest in the transition towards a renewable energy system. “This episode should also serve as a lesson for the Maltese government, which has neglected the energy sector for years on end. It shows the inherent risks of depending totally on foreign energy sources.”

“The dispute between Russia and Ukraine and the fact that several EU member states are already experiencing disruption to their gas supplies is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the EU’s energy supplies and of the urgent need to change the way we meet our energy demands. EU institutions and member states must make major investments in renewable sources of energy and greater energy efficiency which will not only combat climate change and create millions of jobs but will also reduce the EU ‘s dependence on energy supplied from outside the EU, with all the uncertainty and insecurity which that causes.”

AD’s spokesperson Ralph Cassar concluded, “Green policies are policies which look into the long term. The PN’s propaganda machine has taken up to using clichés and catch phrases to project an image of a ‘green government’. The fact is that government’s policies are reactionary rather than visionary and lack any long term planning and vision. We reiterate our call for the government to give heed to commissions it itself set up such as the National Commission for Sustainable Development. The continued pollution by the incinerator in Marsa and the tackling of the energy issue by means of a massive increase in utility bills among other things unmasks all talk about the environment on the Prime Minster’s part as greenwash.”
