The 21st edition of the Victoria Arts Festival opens on Wednesday and this year the programme of events will be held in honour of the late Mro. Joseph Vella, who sadly passed away on the 25th of February.
The inaugural choral and orchestral concert will feature Miriam Cauchi (soprano) Laudate Pueri Choir with Director George Joseph Frendo and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Philip Walsh.
The Victoria International Arts Festival, featuring five weeks of classical music concerts, will once more be opened and closed with two performances by the MPO.
These concerts with the MPO were traditionally conducted by the Festival’s long-standing artistic director, Joseph Vella, whose recent passing left Malta’s music world in shock.
Philip Walsh will now be taking over the baton, however the MPO said that he will be performing the programme selected by Mro Vella. This year’s Festival, is fittingly, being dedicated to him.
The opening concert, which will be held at St George’s Basilica at 8pm, will feature works by Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms.
The full programme of events for the Festival, which runs until Monday, the 9th of July, is available here.
