Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis, speaking today, has said that the revitalisation and reform of Local Councils will help them be able to cop with the current needs of the citizens.
“It is being proposed that the Mayor is offered the possibility to work on a full-time basis,” said Silvio Parnis. “The Mayor must be the leading citizen of the locality and must always be there to provide assistance.”
He went on to say that the regions are at the forefront of this reform and it is felt that they should also be responsible for matters of a social nature.
The Parliamentary Secretary stated that since the “Local Government is the public authority that is closest to the citizens, with a function to improve the quality of life of the people it represents, it is being proposed that the regions are given responsibilities that focus on the social aspect.”
Silvio Parnis concluded by stating that he is certain that in November, more Local Councils will participate in the 16 days of activism, and urged all Councils to contribute by means of local activities during this period.
