98.9% of beaches in Gozo and Malta with high quality water – Report

Malta has achieved second place in the ranking of the most suitable places for swimming with good water quality, in a report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
In the European rankings Luxembourg came in first followed by the beaches of Malta and Gozo. According to this report, in Malta there is good quality sea water in 86 of 87 sites tested.
This report looked at water samples collected in 2017. Altogether, 87 bathing waters were reported, 17 of which are in Gozo – 0.4% of all bathing waters in Europe. No bathing waters have been newly reported in the recent season
The report noted that all bathing waters in Malta are of coastal type. 2060 samples were taken at bathing waters throughout the season – 24 per bathing water on average.
During the bathing season, the Environmental Health Directorate issues a weekly report with the classification for each bathing water based on the Escherichia coli and Intestinal enterococci counts.
The report noted that in 2017 the percentage of excellent quality sites remained as per 2016 bathing season (98.9%)
