Xewkija got off to a great start on Sunday afternoon at the Gozo Stadium, in the final against rivals Ghajnsielem.
The Tigers scored in the opening minutes of the match and controlled the reigning champions for the rest of the first half.
The Xewkija team’s luck changed half way through the second half when Ghajnsielem were awarded a penalty.
This also resulted in a send-off for Xewkija, with Ghajnsielem scoring the equaliser and upping their game with their “numeric superiority,” the GFA said.
However, parity was restored with a send-off for Ghajnsielem, but the teams could not break the deadlock and the match went into extra time.
Ghajnsielem had their dream of retaining the Cup shattered just two minutes from the end of extra time, when Xewkija tapped in a loose ball in the box to end the game.
The BOV GFA Cup was presented to the new champions by Horace Laudi, Executive Gozo Region for Bank of Valletta and Dr Samuel Azzopardi, President of the Gozo Football Association.
