9 schools from Gozo, with over 140 students; have taken part in an educational and environmental event at Dwejra, aimed at creating awareness on the various area of importance of this Natural 2000 site.
The Dwejra Management Steering Committee organised the half day activity, in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo – EcoGozo Intervention Team, Nature Trust FEE Malta -Eco Schools programme and the San Lawrenz Local Council.
A number of education stations were set up in the area covering topics such as biodiversity, geomorphology, marine ecology, geology, habitats and history found on site.
The students also participated in a clean-up event, where the waste collected was separated and analysed. Educators then explained how each type of waste impacted the environment of this important area.
The Dwejra Management Steering Committee was set up in 2016 with the aim of setting the ball rolling for a better management of the site, coordinate with the various stakeholders using the site for a sustainable use of the area, and to add value to the area for environmental social and economic improvements.
Dr Timmy Gambin Chair of the Dwejra Committee, gave his heartfelt thanks to those who helped organise this event.
He also added that it is at events such as these that one may observe, “the passion, dedication and effort of those who work hard for Dwejra.”
