More visitors to Malta and Gozo, spending more and staying longer

According to data from the National Statistics Office today, the number of inbound visitors in March were estimated at 167,197, up by 18.4% on last year and they spent around €116.0 which was up by 20.2%.
Of these, 137,504 trips were carried out for holiday purposes, while a further 15,673 were undertaken for business purposes.
The number travelling from EU Member States, increased by 17.3% to 144,345 when compared to the same month last year.
The NSO noted that there were almost 1.1 million nights spent by travellers in March, up by 26.9% when compared to last year.
The largest share of guest nights – 63.4 per cent – was spent in collective accommodation establishments, the NSO said.
During the first three months this year, inbound tourists reached 414,400, up by 18.8% on last year, the NSO said. Total nights spent also went up, this time by 18.4%, reaching nearly 2.7 million nights.
In the same period, tourism expenditure reached nearly €271.5 million, 14.4% higher than that recorded for 2017. Total expenditure per capita stood at €655, a decrease of 3.7% when compared to last year.
