Gozitan Joe Sultana presented with National Buonamico AwardPresident Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca has presented the Environment and Resources Authority’s National Buonamico Award to Gozitan Joe Sultana, to mark the occasion of World Wildlife Day.

The ceremony was held at San Anton Palace and the award was also presented to Edwin Lanfranco and David Dandria.

The presentations were made for their valuable contribution to boost Maltese knowledge on biodiversity and national environmental heritage. The President thanked the three award winners on behalf of the people of Malta and Gozo.

President Coleiro Preca expressed the wish that their efforts serve to ensure that our environmental heritage remains at the top of the country’s agenda. “This can happen with the participation of civil society and through the education of our children,” she said.

The President went on to say that we need as a country, to continue to focus on green open spaces across Malta and Gozo.

The President concluded by urging everyone “to be courageous and continue to put pressure on the authorities, policy makers, and civil society, to be strong activists for the protection of our country’s natural heritage.”

Joe Sultana is a well-known naturalist and passionate ornithologist. He served for several years as President of the Malta Ornithological Society/BirdLife Malta, Council Member of BirdLife International, consultant of the European Diploma for Protected Areas of the Council of Europe, and Principal Environment Officer of the former Dept. of Environment.

      I congratulate Mr Joe Sultana, a very old friend even when at different classes at the Gozo Lyceum, playing football against each other and most of all old time friends. Joe is a very honest person and above all a true gentleman. I do miss my conversations with him.
      I wish him all the very best as he totally deserve this prestigious honor.
