Celebrating sport and sportsmen in Gozo – Gozo Sports Awards

“This is a celebration of sport and sportsmen in Gozo,” said the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, during the finals night of the Gozo Sports Awards.
In this fourth edition of the Gozo Sports Awards, 11 Gozitan athlete were honoured for their commitment and achievements in the year 2017. There were three new awards – for children – girls and boys under 12 years and active athlete over 60 years of age.
The evening, which took place in a hotel in Gozo, was sponsored by the Ministry for Gozo, held under the auspices of the Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana.
In her address, the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana reiterated that the Ministry will give its full commitment to supporting the improvement of existing sporting facilities as well as build new ones.
The winners were chosen by a jury of five people in a open vote so as to ensure a more transparent result..
The only three awards presented by the Gozo Sports Board directly was for an active athlete over 60, this was given to an athlete of 69 years, Mr Amand Verraneman, a Belgian who has lived in Gozo for more 38 years and still competitive in swimming and athletics. There was special recognition to a young man Carmelo Pace, who plays as a striker in the National Football team of the Special Olympics and finished as their top scorer. While 82-year old Vincent Grech received special recognition for his sporting career as a former football player and coach,

The most dedicated boy under 12: Nathan Bonello (Athletics)
The most promising female youth U18: Valentina Rape (Football)
The most promising male youth U18: Marlon Attard (Gozo Clay Shooting Ace)
Official of the Year: Joseph Scicluna (Ghajnsielem Red Coats Soft Ball)
The Team of the Year: Gozo Under 17s Girls (Football)
Sports Person of the Year – Female: Maria Farrugia (Football)
Sports Person of the Year – Male: Charlton Debono (Athletics)
60+ Active Athlete: Amand P. Verraneman (Triathlon)
Special Recognition Special Olympics: Carmelo Pace (Football Special Olympics)
Special Recognition Sports Career: Vincent Grech (Football).
