The Gozo Business Chamber has welcomed the comments made by Minister Dr Ian Borg regarding the progress on the proposed subsea tunnel between Gozo and Malta.
The GBC, in a statement said that, it is “delighted that the ground-work prepared by the Chamber report in 2016 is coming into fruition.”
Saying that it has been “the main promoter for this project since its inception and it is through its efforts with the political parties that we are now at this stage.”
The Chamber went on to say that it continued to support the Government in the promotion of the project, which, the GBC said, “is seen as the long-term solution to the problem of the connectivity and double insularity which Gozo is wrought with.”
It congratulates Dr. Franco Mercieca on his appointment as Chairman of the Committee within Transport Malta that will promote this project. Adding that it has “full faith” in his capabilities, and pledged “all the help and support needed in the works of this committee.”
The GBC also welcomed the appointment of the Norwegian institution SINTEF as the main consultant on this project. “SINTEF are an authority on tunnelling and we consider the choice as very positive,” the Chamber said.
The Chamber concluded by saying that it looks forward to seeing “concrete progress of this project that will benefit the national economy and facilitate the integration of the social and economic contributions of the island of Gozo within the national scenario.”
