Travel assistance scheme launched for Gozitan sportsmen and womenOn this International Day devoted to sports to help in development and peace, the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, has announced a new scheme to assist sportsmen and women in Gozo.

Dr Caruana explained that through the scheme, Gozitan sportspersons who who are not on a professional contract, will be given financial assistance for their ferry tickets, to reduce the costs incurred to travel between Malta and Gozo for training and competitions.

The Minister said that the financial assistance, which can be up to € 500 a year for each athlete, will reduce the burden of travel costs to Malta for training, therefore helping to encourage athletes to continue training and improve their skills.

Dr Caruana said that, the Ministry has pledged its commitment to enhance the sporting element in Gozo through initiatives and capital projects aimed at improving both existing and new sports facilities.

Sean Daly, Chairman of the Gozo Sports Board, welcomed this initiative and encouraged local sportspersons to seize the opportunity and go training in Malta, through the support of this scheme.
