As part of the celebrations in Gozo for World Water Day last week, groups of school children visited Ghar Ilma in the limits of Kercem, where there is a viewing point over the start of the aqueduct.
The children were joined on their visit to this historic site by the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana. The Ministry for Gozo said that as part of the EcoGozo Vision, it organised this event to promote and highlight the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.Built in the 1880s by the British to transport water to Victoria, the aqueduct runs from Ghar Ilma cave in Santa Lucija to Victoria and water was stored in a reservoir within the Cittadella ditch.
Last July the Ministry for Gozo announced the start of consolidation works on the Gozo aqueduct structures.
