Aid scheme for Gozitan farmers for restoration of wells and reservoirsThe Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana has announced a new initiative for the restoration or cleaning of wells and reservoirs owned by Gozitan farmers.

The main objective of this initiative is for Gozitan farmers to restore and clean the wells /existing reservoirs in their fields so as to increase water storage. It is applicable for all full-time or part-time farmers.

This scheme, which will reimburse the Gozitan farmers up to 90% of their cost, was announced today – United Nations World Water Day.

The Minister said that the theme chosen for this year by the United Nations is – Nature for Water, with the emphasis on water collected through nature-based solutions.

The Minister explained that in the summer, upon receipt of the necessary permits, the EcoGozo Directorate will begin the ongoing work of valley clean-ups.

“This will not just be a one-off project by the Ministry for Gozo,” said Dr Caruana, “We will also build rubble walls in rural areas protecting the fields and thereby preventing the soil being washed away which would eventually end up in the valleys and sea.”

For more information on this scheme please visit the Ministry for Gozo website or call the EcoGozo Directorate on 22100207.
