Episcopal consecration of Mgr Alfred Xuereb and his visit to GozoThe episcopal consecration of Mgr Alfred Xuereb to Archbishop, will take place tomorrow at the Vatican Basilica, presided by Pope Francis, starting at 5.00pm and will be transmitted live on TV2000

The announcement was made last month by the Vatican, when Pope Francis also appointed Mgr Xuereb as Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea and Mongolia.

E.T. Mons Alfred Xuereb will be visiting Gozo from the 26th of March before he leaves for South Korea. The programme of his visit is shown below:

Monday 26 March at 11.15am: Arrival at the Malta International Airport, followed by press conference.

Thursday 29 March at 9.00am: Presiding at the Chrism Mass with E.T. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, and the priests of the diocese of Gozo, at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Victoria.

Thursday 29 March at 6.30pm: Presiding at Cœna Domini Mass with the Rite of the Washing of Feet in the Basilica of St George, Victoria, his parish of origin.

Saturday 31 March at 8.30pm: Solemn Liturgy Presiding at the Holy Easter Vigil of the Resurrection of Our Lord, in the Basilica of St George.

Sunday 1st April: Administering the Sacrament of Baptism during a private Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Grace, the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, Victoria.

Wednesday 4 April: Mass at the Gozo General Hospital.

Friday 6 April at 7.00pm: Mass in the Parish Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart, Fontana, on the occasion of the first Friday in preparation for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart.

Saturday 7 April evening: Mass at the Parish Church of Our Lady of Loreto, Ghajnsielem.

Sunday 8 April at 11.15am: Presiding at solemn Pontifical Mass at the National Shrine of Ta ‘Pinu, with the participation of E.T. Mgr. Mario Grech, E.T. Mgr. George Bugeja OFM, Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli and Apostolic Administrator of Benghazi, and Gozitan clergy, to be transmitted live on Net TV.

Monday 9 April: Departure from Malta.

Mgr Xuereb was born on October the 14th 1958, and became a priest on May the 26th 1984. He celebrated his first Solemn High Mass at St George’s basilica in Victoria in the context of the July festivities in honour of St George.

He began working in the secretariat of the Pontifical Lateran University in 1991. He started his service in the Vatican Secretariat of State in 1995, before transferring to the Pontifical Household in November 2000.

He returned to the Secretariat of State, serving as secretary to Pope Benedict XVI from 2007 and then to Pope Francis from his election in March 2013.

He was appointed as delegate for the Pontifical Commission for Reference on the Institute for the Works of Religion and for the Pontifical Commission for study and guidance on the organisation of the economic-administrative structure of the Holy See on 28 November 2013.

In March 2014 he was appointed as prelate secretary general of the Secretariat for Economic Affairs on 3 March 2014.

Mgr Alfred Xuereb knows Italian, English, German, Portuguese and French.
