Information session on organic farming held in QalaAn information session on Organic Farming in Gozo, has been held in Qala organised by the Gozo Ministry, with the collaboration of the Qala Local Council.

The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, gave a short speech before the session started and said this would be of interest not only to commercial farmers, but also to anyone with a direct or indirect connection with agriculture.

Dr Caruana explained how this craft has successfully adapted to modern technological development, therefore being able to survive and be productive.

She said that through technology and modern methods, farmers are now prepared to meet the demand and grow a selection of produce that consumers are seeking.

“However, this technological advancement combined with modern practices, is also increasing the use of pesticides among agricultural products,” she said.

Minister Caruana said that through courses and training sessions, anyone interested will have the opportunity to understand how to completely eliminate pesticides in farming and eventually, have produce that is full of natural flavour.

Dr Caruana reiterated the Ministry for Gozo’s commitment towards farming in Gozo. She said that in fact, just a few days ago, an agreement was signed with the Ministry of Education for students who attend agribusiness courses to use the facilities at the Government Experimental Farm in Xewkija.

The Minister explained that these are part of a series of initiatives that the Ministry for Gozo will be carrying out, which will see a shift in favour of Gozitan farmers.

The Mayor of Qala Paul Buttigieg, thanked the Ministry for Gozo for this opportunity, and said that “the Local Council, albeit with limited resources, will continue to build on this information session.”
