The Minister Justyne Caruana has announced that the St Joseph Home for the Elderly project in Ghajnsielem will now see an increase of the services available to cater for a wider range of needs, including dementia.
During a visit to the site, Dr Caruana explained how the Ministry had updated the plans and obtained the necessary permits to change the original plans to now include an additional block dedicated for cases of dementia.
Justyne Caruana explained that the Ministry is committed to addressing the challenge of ageing in Gozo, adding that it “is well aware that the rate of dementia is increasing.”
Therefore amendments were made so that the home is according to recent standards, introduced new facilities and ensured that it is fully dementia friendly, including a provision of beds for a basic residential service, as well as respite care.
“The project for this home for the elderly was started in the last term and now, having been upgraded, the construction is expected to be completed within a further three months,” Dr Caruana added, “We are currently finalising the tender for the finishings and household operation.”
The Minister Caruana pointed out how the Government through the Ministry for Gozo, has an ambitious goal of 500 new beds for the elderly in Gozo. “This promise will now be carried out with this new block, as well as through buying beds from the private sector.” she said.
