Pope Francis appoints Mgr Alfred Xuereb Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea

Today the Vatican announced that Pope Francis has elevated Mgr Alfred Xuereb to Archbishop and appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea and Mongolia.
The news of the appointment has been welcomed by both the Gozo Diocese and the Maltese Archdiocese.
Mgr Alfred Xuereb’s episcopal consecration will be presided by Pope Francis at the Vatican Basilica, on Monday, the 19th of March.
Mgr Xuereb was born on October the 14th 1958, and became a priest on May the 26th 1984. He celebrated his first Solemn High Mass at St George’s basilica in Victoria in the context of the July festivities in honour of St George.
He began working in the secretariat of the Pontifical Lateran University in 1991. He started his service in the Vatican Secretariat of State in 1995, before transferring to the Pontifical Household in November 2000.
He returned to the Secretariat of State, serving as secretary to Pope Benedict XVI from 2007 and then to Pope Francis from his election in March 2013.
He was appointed as delegate for the Pontifical Commission for Reference on the Institute for the Works of Religion and for the Pontifical Commission for study and guidance on the organisation of the economic-administrative structure of the Holy See on 28 November 2013.
In March 2014 he was appointed as prelate secretary general of the Secretariat for Economic Affairs on 3 March 2014.
Mgr Alfred Xuereb knows Italian, English, German, Portuguese and French.
