Number of inbound tourists and expenditure both up for last year

The number of visitors to the Maltese islands for December were estimated at 110,611, the NSO aid today. This was an increase of 14.7 per cent when compared to 2016.
Of those, a total of 96,186 tourist trips were for holiday purposes, while a further 7,768 were for business purposes.
EU Member States visiting tourists went up by 13.2 per cent to 93,435 when compared to 2016, the NSO said.
It noted that the total nights spent also went up by 17.3 per cent when compared to December 2016, amounting to 790,947 nights.
Collection accommodation establishments saw the largest share of guest nights (57.0 per cent). While tourist nights in collective accommodation increased by 20.0 per cent when compared to December 2016.
Tourist expenditure for December increased by 24. per cent, and was estimated at €77.5 million.
The NSO said that from January to December 2017 inbound trips reached 2,273,837, up by 15.7 per cent over the same period in 2016. Total nights spent by inbound tourists went up by 10.3 per cent, surpassing 16.5 million nights.
Total tourism expenditure for last year surpassed €1.9 billion, 13.9 per cent higher than that recorded for 2016.
