Students of Gozo Collage Primary School Victoria commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day during the morning assembly on Thursday.
All the students, with the help of staff members wore a band with the Star of David or a triangle to remember the millions of Jews both adults and children, the gypsies, homosexuals, African people, people with special needs and others with different political views who have suffered so much and were subjected to many injustices during the last world war.
Students from Year 5 and Year 6, wearing a striped uniform such as those worn by prisoners in the concentration camps, read excerpts from the book of Ann Frank and Viktor Frankl, who had both experienced time in a camp.
Other students displayed posters with the names and flags of countries where genocides have taken place over the years.
The school said that the message of love, peace and tolerance became clear from the children themselves when asked to express their thoughts.
A minute’s silence was held to remember the victims of war. For the occasion, the flag of Malta and that of EkoSkola were flown at half mast.
This activity was held at the initiative of Personal Social Career Development teachers, complementary teachers, the Nurture and Ethics Classes and with the collaboration of all school teachers.
International Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on the 27th of January, which marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
The power of words is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 – Words can make a difference – both for good and evil.
